Suspect arrested in attempted shooting

Police have arrested a man in his twenties in connection with an attempted shooting and accident.  No one was hurt in the Saturday shooting attempt.

Dayton Police Sgt Mark Ponichtera says a personal dispute led to the attempted shooting on Samuel Street. Police found the suspect's car nearby.   Inside, officers found an unloaded holster.

The suspect switched cars, and was later involved in an accident on South Smithville and Argella.  The suspect's car hit a truck, which ran into a pole and broke it. The suspect took off and went to a house at 4211 Farnham where he has relatives. 

Police say they made several attempts to get the man to surrender. They did get a small child and two women out of the house. 

Officers finally called the SWAT team.  Members  made contact by phone, and  the suspect finally surrendered.  

Sgt. Ponichtera says the suspect is being uncooperative.  The two women are also being uncooperative, and may face charges. 

The truck driver and the suspect were both taken to the hospital for a check-up. The suspect will then be taken to the Montgomery County Jail. 

Officers say that the suspect has a police record.  He will face charges of assault, and felony fleeing from police.

Woman arrested in Mercer County for scraping

Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey announced Saturday his office has filed charges against a Celina woman regarding an area break-in of a local business. Mandi L. Gibbons, age 31, of 632 Grove Street #9, Celina, is currently being held in the Mercer County Detention Center on charges of breaking and entering and theft, both felonies of the fifth degree.

"Gibbons has admitted to stealing over $1,000 in metal tent stakes from Reliable Rental, Inc. in Celina. The business reported the theft on January 20 and deputies responded and took a report. Information was obtained placing  Gibbons at the scene in the days following and also information regarding the disposal and sale of the stolen items," said Sheriff Grey.

On Thursday,  during an interview at the Sheriff’s Office, Gibbons admitted to the theft and disposal of the items at a local salvage yard. "Gibbons was taken into custody and incarcerated at the Mercer County Jail," noted Grey.

Her vehicle that was used in the theft offense was towed from the Sheriff’s Office and impounded. The vehicle contains other items that are believed to stolen, including a large amount of farm machinery and pieces of farm machinery and other equipment.

Gibbons appeared in Celina Municipal Court on Friday and was ordered held on a $5,000 cash bond.

Two dead in Butler County crash

Two men were killed in an early Saturday morning crash.  Police say a 2000 blue Honda Civic crashed into two parked tractor-trailers. The accident happened in a parking lot of a packing warehouse on International Boulevard near Duff Drive. 

Officers believe the crash happened between 4 and 5 a.m. Saturday. It was seen by a passer-by around 9 a.m.

Investigators say the driver went off the road, crashed into three trees, went airborne, and then under the semis.  The men were killed instantly. They have not been identified.

Police are trying to find out of speed or alcohol played a part in the accident.
