The Miami County commissioners Tuesday suspended five members of the county maintenance department, including the facilities and safety director, pending the outcome of a sheriff’s office investigation.
Suspended without pay were facilities and safety director Jarrod Harrah and employee Bruce Ball. Suspended with pay were employees Rob Scherer, Tony Canfarelli and Stan Maitlen.
Neither the commissioners nor Sheriff Charles Cox would discuss the nature of the investigation.
The resolution states the investigation involves possible violations of five sections of the Ohio Revised Code. Those sections deal with: theft, theft in office, unlawful interest in a public contract, tampering with evidence and tampering with records.
The resolution also states the commission “has determined that there is reasonable cause to believe said certain employees may have violated said sections of the Ohio Revised Code.”
The commission met in an executive session Tuesday morning with Cox and Prosecutor Gary Nasal. They met in executive session again in the afternoon with Nasal and Assistant Prosecutor Mark Altier before voting unanimously to approve the suspensions.
The employees were being notified of the suspensions by letter. The suspensions were effective immediately and are pending further and final investigation and the discipline process.
Cox said late Tuesday afternoon that detectives were continuing interviews with the employees. Commission President John “Bud” O’Brien said he was notified of the investigation Friday and could not comment further because it was ongoing.
O’Brien said with the suspensions the maintenance department has three full-time employees, a janitorial supervisor and a part-time grounds keeper available to work. The commission will be making adjustments as soon as possible to ensure the department’s continued operation, although routine work is being done, he said.

Two people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Dorothy Lane in Kettering Tuesday evening.
According to Kettering Police, a black Jeep Liberty was attempting to make a left turn from eastbound Dorothy onto Galewood Street at about 7 p.m. The driver of a westbound vehicle waved the driver of the Jeep on, indicating that he could turn. However there was another westbound vehicle in the other lane that was struck by the Jeep, police said.
A man and a woman in the Jeep were injured and transported to the hospital. Their injuries are not life-threatening. No one in the oncoming BMV what was hit was injured. A third car suffered minor damage in the crash as well, but no one was injured.
The driver of the Jeep will likely be cited for failure to yield, police said.
One lane of westbound Dorothy was closed for more than a half hour while the accident was investigated and cleaned up.
